A new world order?

30 Jan

Is our system of captalist, free-market economics fundamentally corrupt? Increasing numbers of people think so.

If you have a spare 2.5 hours I recommend watching Moving Forward from the Zeitgeist Movement. It’s a fascinating analysis of our economic system and its effects on human flourishing. Lots of interesting things to say about equality. Of course, its important that you watch these things critically – you don’t have to agree with everything you watch! WARNING: There is a little bit of bad language dotted around and some distressing images at times. This is not a light-hearted rom-com; it is a film designed to encourage you to rethink the structure of society as we know it! You have been warned! (Please feel free to discuss anything you don’t understand with me)

They refer to The Equality Trust in the film. Have a look – there are some interesting statistics about the relationship between inequality in society and social ills such as obesity, mental health issues, drug abuse etc.

    Really interesting stuff Mr. Bigg.
I’ve only watched about 40 minutes but this is a really strong argument and their basis on biological evidence to show the harm that human actions and a lack of them can cause really makes me think that the actions that we call our nature are implanted in our mind simply because disobeying them brings us to all sorts of harm. Really we should just do what feels natural to us and let convention and society be damned? But as I say, this is based on the first 40 minutes and I haven’t really gotten into any analysis of the economic impact on human behaviour. Still it’s really awesome stuff.
Also, why is this called Zeitgeist? As I understand it, Zeitgeist is the popular standpoint of a certain period of time but most of the stuff they’re saying contradicts with our the current global standpoint on these issues?
    Thanks.

Glad you’re enjoying it! Be sure to continue critical evaluation! Although there are lots of really interesting arguments there’s another side to every story…

I’m not entirely sure why they refer to themselves as the Zeitgeist movement… Maybe they hope their ideas will become the “spirit of the age”?
